Brisbane is a city brimming with arts and culture, activities for the family, nature and wildlife, exciting attractions, great restaurants, and a vibrant nightlife scene. South Bank Street Beach is perfect for swimming and picnicking. The Queensland Art Gallery is kid-friendly, and the Sciencentre has interactive exhibits. Within the city is the City Botanic Gardens and the Roma Street Parkland. You can see humpback whales off the coast of Queensland or observe koalas up close at the Daisy Hill Koala Centre.

Experience an array of free arts and culture. City Sounds is free to the public and provides up and coming musicians with a place to perform, and hosts national and international companies. Brisbane Powerhouse at New Farm presents indie and rock bands.

The Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art provides free programs and exhibitions all year. The Queensland Museum also provides educational exhibits, free to the public. Cultural festivals are presented all year. They include the Friday Night Laneways and Valley Fiesta, South Bank Young Designers Market, and BrisAsia Festival.

A great way to spend the day is to take a cruise to the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. On the cruise you'll see historic sites and habitats of native wildlife, or go on the exciting, Story Bridge Adventure Climb to the summit, 80 metres high, for panoramic views of Brisbane and the Scenic Rim.

Shopping, Dining, and Nightlife

Paddington, The City, the top shopping destination in Brisbane with over 1,000 shops, and Fortitude Valley, have anchor stores, designer and vintage fashions, antiques, and collectibles. The dining scene in Brisbane offers a wide array of culinary experiences. The City District has an array of good coffee houses and cafes. M&A Lane has bars and restaurants that serve local dishes and international cuisine. Papa Jack's, a hot nightspot, is a New Orleans-style bar.

Outdoor dining is a fun option when you're visiting Brisbane. Enjoy spectacular views of the city from one of the rooftop bars, or enjoy a leisurely lunch or dinner at one of the riverfront restaurants. Brisbane even has a number of restaurants and cafes that serve organic and vegetarian dishes for the health conscious.

Places to Stay

Hotels in Brisbane are lower cost than you might anticipate. The Central Business District, Inner Brisbane, the outer suburbs of the city, and even Moreton Island, are all options. You can choose from 5-star hotels, cheap hostels, bed and breakfasts, farmstays, apartments, parks for tourists, or caravan parks. Brisbane is a large city, but is easy to get around, and many of the attractions are within walking distance from many of the accommodations.
