Air Macau began flying 9 November,1995 with an inaugural flight from Masau to Beijing and Shanghai. Before 1995 there was only air service to Macau by helicopter. Macau, like Hong Kong enjoys a designation of Special Administrative Region. Air Macau is 60 kilometres (37 miles) southwest of Hong Kong. In the vein of Monte Carlo or Las Vegas, Macau's economy is driven by tourism with a emphasis on the gambling industry. Air Macau Company Ltd is the flagship carrier of Macau with hub of Macau International Airport. Air Macau is owned by China National Aviation (CNAC) - 51%. Other owners of the Macau based carrier are TAP Portugal (20%), STDM (14%), EVA Air (5%), Macau private investors (5%) and the Macau Government (5%). Air Macau employees 1,023 persons. Air Macau's fleet is 18 aircraft with 6 on order. Air Macau admits more than 70% of it's passenger revenue is earned from Taiwan Strait crossing traffic.
