The Savvy Traveller's Guide For Getting From Sydney Airport to the CBD

By Gath Adams on 17/Jun/2014

After arriving at Sydney Airport on your long flight to Australia, what is the best way to get from the airport to your hotel in the Central Business District?

Fortunately, Sydney Airport is only 9km from the city centre and there are many simple ways to make the journey. Let’s take a look at the top five ways:

1. The Easiest Option – Train

The Airport Link is a simple budget option. The trains run approximately every 10 minutes from Platform 1 and it only takes 13 minutes for the train to reach the city. Tickets are $16.40 for an adult and $12.50 for a child, student or senior.

You will also need to pay the Gatepass, which is an airport station surcharge of $12. If you will be staying in Sydney for 7 days or less and you will be coming back to the airport when you leave, you will save money by buying a one-week Gatepass.

2. The Cheapest Option – Bus + Train

If you want to save your money, the cheapest option is to take the local 400 bus toward Bondi Junction. Get off at the stop after the domestic terminal, which is only 300m from the Mascot rail station. If you catch the train at this station, you will not have to pay the GatePass fee.

Taking the bus and then the train is not the most convenient option, but the bus will only cost $3.30 and the train $3.40, so this is the best choice if you are on a tight budget.

3. The Fastest Option – Taxi

If you just want to head straight to Sydney without worrying about catching trains or shuttles, a taxi will take you directly to your downtown hotel for around $40. On top of this, you will need to pay a $3.80 airport levy and a $5.50 toll.

There can be a lot of taxi traffic during peak times, so ask your driver to take O’Riordan Street instead to avoid the congestion.

4. The Most Luxurious Option – Limo

Want to make a grand entrance into Sydney? It is possible to hire a limousine service to pick you up at the airport so that you can arrive like a rock star. There is a limo company, Royale Travel, located in the airport where you can book this service (but it is recommended to book in advance).

The price for a Ford LTD stretch limo is $133AUD and it can hold 7 people. The chic Chrysler 300C stretch limo can hold 9 – 11 people and costs $332.50AUD. If you don’t mind the splurge, this could be a fun option for a special occasion, such as picking up a visiting wedding party from the airport.

5. The Convenient Option – Shuttle

There are shuttle buses at the airport that will drive you directly to the city and drop you off at your hotel. You can buy a shuttle bus ticket at the airport in Terminal 1 or 3, for approximately $18. It is also possible to save money on shuttle fares by booking online in advance.

No matter which way you choose to get to downtown from the airport, you’ll have a blast exploring exciting and vibrant Sydney!
