Brisbane Travel Information

As the capital of the state of Queensland, Brisbane is the third largest city in Australia, with 2.2 million residents. Situated along the Brisbane River, for which it was named, the first white settlers arrived when the area was established as a penal colony in 1824. Prior to the penal colony, the area had been historically settled by Aborigines. Brisbane itself was not made an official city until 1902, much after the state of Queensland was well established. Since the hosting the Commonwealth Games in 1982, Brisbane has gained recognition and popularity around the world, especially among tourists. Today it is one of Australia's cultural hubs, offering a rich variety of things to see and do, including fine dining, sporting activities, wildlife habitats and famous historical sites.

Historic Places to Visit in Brisbane

Brisbane offers a wide variety of historical sites. If you’re interested in architecture, check out St John's Cathedral, on Ann Street, one of Australia's oldest cathedrals, built in 1853. The deanery, located nearby, is renowned as being one of the city's most attractive houses. George Street Mansion is another famous historic site in Brisbane, comprised of a row of old terraced houses that show off the beauty of the city's past. On this street, you’ll also find the Old Government House and the Parliament House, both beautiful examples of the city's Renaissance style architecture.

If you’re looking for something a little different, The Old Windmill, located at Wickham Terrace, offers a look into Brisbane’s darker past. It was built by convicts who lived in the original penal colony in the 1820's. Or, visit The General Post Office, built in the 1870's, which offers neoclassic architecture, as well as hosting a small telephone and radio museum.
