Finnair conjures images of steep, snow-capped mountains, cozy Fijords, and the stinging fresh air of Scandinavia. It is from these beautiful surroundings that Aero O\Y (Aero, Ltd.) was founded on 01 November, 1923 by Consul Bruno Lucander. The charter establishing this business was signed in Helsinki 12 September, 1923 and entered into the trade registry 11 December, 1923. Aero O\Y ( as Finnair was known in those days), made the their inaugural flight 20 March, 1924, from Helsinki, Finland to Tallin, Estonia. The flight was made with a Junker F-13 equipped with floats.
World War II was a difficult time for Finnair. Due to Swedens neutrality during this international conflict, during the winter of 1939-1940 prior to the Nazi occupation of Norway and the development of the Russian front, half of the passengers transported during this time period were refugee children seeking evacuation to Sweden. In 1946, the Finnish government acquired a majority stake in the airline.
