V Australia is a new long haul airline owned and operated by Virgin Blue Holdings Limited. V Australia (officially V Australia Airlines) is based in Brisbane and will initially fly between Sydney and several west Coast USA cities. It is expected to begin flights in late 2008.
As with Virgin Blue, the name of the airline was decided through a competition. The 8 finalists were; Matilda Blue, V Australia Airlines, Australia Blue, Virgin Pacific, Amelia Blue, Didgeree Blue, Liberty Blue and Virgin Australia. V Australia airlines was chosen as the winner, and Didgeree Blue has been chosen to be the name of the first airplane.
Virgin Blue has placed an order with Boeing for six Boeing 777-300ER planes and will lease a seventh from ILFC. The airline has been predicted to be profitable within 2 years by Virgin Blue's chief executive Brett Godfrey.
