Ethiopian Airlines

Emperor Haile Selassie, Emperor of Ethiopia is more associated with being the "Father of the Rastafarian People", than being the founder of an airline. Nonetheless, Emperor Selassie, with assistance from the now defunct Trans World Airlines, started the airline in late 1945 and the first flight was on 8 April, 1946. Ethiopian Airlines began weekly service between Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and the largest city on the African continent, Cairo, Egypt. Long haul service began 12 years later with service to Frankfurt, West Germany. In 1963, Ethiopian Airlines began jet service between Addis Ababa and Nairobi.
