Garuda Indonesia
Garuda Indonesia is the national airline of Indonesia. Garuda Indonesia is also the flagship carrier of the island nation. The airline is named after the mythical bird Garuda who in Indian Vedic tradition, is the carrier of the Hindu god, Vishnu. Garuda Indonesia Airline is based in Jakarta and is hubbed at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. Garuda Indonesia is also the airport's primary provider of ramps, baggage handling and also controls fuel dispensing services for the airport authority. Garuad Indonesia's frequent flyer program is "Garuda Frequent Flyer".Garuda Indonesia was founded 26 January, 1949. In the begining the airline flew as Garuda Indonesian Airways. The first aircraft used for Garuda's inaugural flight was a Douglas DC-3, known as "Seulawah" (Acehnese: Gold Mountain) and was purchased for $ 120,000 Malayan dollars. The East Asian Economic Crisis of 1998 hit Indonesia and Garuda Indonesia Airlines hard, resulting in severe cutbacks on routes that were deemed unprofitable by the airline's financial team. These cutbacks halted European and North American flights. In 2001 a low cost airline, CitiLink was established to provide shuttle service between Indonesian cities. Citilink serves as a subsidiary airline of Garuda Indonesia.
