Lufthansa
Lufthansa is the biggest airline in Europe in respect of overall passengers carried, and the flag carrier of Germany. The name of the company springs from Luft ( the German word for "air" ), and Hansa ( after Hanseatic League, the tough medieval trading group ). The bulk of Lufthansa's pilots, ground staff, and flight attendants are based out of Frankfurt.
Lufthansa is a founding member of Star Alliance, the biggest airline coalition in the world. Star Alliance was formed in 1997 along with Thai Airways, United Airlines, Air Canada and Scandinavian Airlines System. The Lufthansa Group operates more than five hundred aircraft and employs 105,261 folk worldwide of 146 nationalities ( 31 December 2007 ).
