Getting to central Los Angeles from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)

LAX is on the coast in the Westchester district, roughly 29 km from downtown Los Angeles. There is no train station inside the terminals yet, so reaching the city takes a bit more planning than at most airports.

  • FlyAway bus is the most practical direct option. Non-stop coaches run to Union Station (downtown) every 15 to 30 minutes during the day, taking 30 to 60 minutes depending on traffic. Buses depart from the lower (arrivals) level of each terminal.
  • Metro rail is accessible via a free shuttle bus to the LAX/Metro Transit Centre, where you can board the C Line (Green) and connect to downtown or other parts of the network. Allow 60 to 75 minutes to reach Union Station including the shuttle and transfer.
  • Big Blue Bus Line 3 runs from the LAX/Metro Transit Centre to downtown Santa Monica in about 40 to 50 minutes. A free shuttle connects the terminals to the transit centre.
  • Rideshare and taxis pick up from the LAX-it lot, reached by a free shuttle from arrivals. The lot can have long queues on busy evenings, so factor in extra wait time.

LA is a car-centric city. Traffic on the 405 freeway is notoriously heavy during weekday peaks (7 to 10 am and 3 to 7 pm). If you are renting a car, some express lanes require a FasTrak transponder.
