Emirates FAQs

Frequently asked questions about Emirates
Is Emirates a good airline?

Emirates is one of the world's most awarded airlines, consistently recognised at the Skytrax World Airline Awards. It's known for its premium in-flight experience, modern fleet, and extensive global network connecting over 150 destinations through its Dubai hub. Even in Economy, Emirates offers a generous experience with meals, entertainment, and baggage all included.

Which Australian cities does Emirates fly from?

Emirates operates direct flights from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide to Dubai. From Dubai, you can connect to destinations across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and beyond. Some Australian routes are operated with the iconic A380, offering the onboard lounge and shower spa in premium cabins.

What baggage allowance does Emirates offer?

Emirates is generous with baggage. Economy checked baggage ranges from 20kg on Special fares to 35kg on Flex Plus, with Saver fares at 25kg and Flex at 30kg. Business Class gets 40kg and First Class gets 50kg. All passengers can bring 7kg of carry-on. There are no bag quantity limits within your weight allowance, so you can split it across multiple bags.

Does Emirates include meals and entertainment?

Yes — every Emirates fare includes full meal service and the ice entertainment system, one of the most extensive in the sky with thousands of channels of movies, TV, music, and games on seatback screens. Meals include multi-course dining with complimentary drinks including wine, beer, and spirits in all classes. Wi-Fi is also available, with a free allowance included.

What classes does Emirates offer?

Emirates offers Economy, Premium Economy, Business, and First Class. Premium Economy is expanding across the network and offers wider seats, extra legroom, and enhanced service. Economy is well-regarded with good legroom and full service. Business Class features lie-flat seats and direct aisle access on the 777. First Class offers private suites, and on the A380, includes an onboard shower spa and access to the inflight lounge bar.

Do I have to stop in Dubai when flying Emirates?

For most destinations beyond the Middle East, yes — Emirates routes connect through its Dubai hub. The good news is Dubai Airport is purpose-built for efficient connections, with short transfer times between flights. If you're heading to Europe, Africa, or further into Asia, you'll typically transit through Dubai with a connection time of a few hours.

Does it cost extra to stop over in Dubai?

No — you can add a stopover in Dubai at no extra airfare cost on most connecting itineraries. If you have an unavoidable long layover (8-26 hours), Emirates Dubai Connect provides a complimentary hotel stay, meals, and transfers. If you'd rather explore Dubai for a few days, the separate Dubai Stopover programme lets you extend your trip and build it into the same booking.

Can I earn frequent flyer points on Emirates?

Emirates has its own loyalty programme called Skywards, where you earn miles on every flight. For Australian travellers, Emirates also has a partnership with Qantas — you can earn and redeem Qantas Points on Emirates flights, and vice versa. This makes Emirates a strong option if you're a Qantas Frequent Flyer looking for more routes and redemption options.

How do I find cheap Emirates flights?

Track Emirates fares on IWantThatFlight and set up fare alerts to get notified when prices drop. Emirates runs global sales several times a year with significant discounts to Europe, the Middle East, and beyond. Booking in advance and being flexible with dates helps. Given the baggage and meals included, Emirates can be surprisingly competitive against carriers that charge for extras.
