Getting to central Tokyo from Narita International Airport (NRT)

Narita Airport is about 60 km east of central Tokyo in Chiba Prefecture. It is much further from the city than Haneda, so allow at least 90 minutes door-to-door from the plane to a central Tokyo hotel.

  • Narita Express (N'EX) runs to Tokyo Station in about 55 minutes, continuing to Shinagawa, Shibuya and Shinjuku. Trains depart roughly every 30 to 60 minutes. All seats are reserved, so book ahead during busy periods like Golden Week and New Year. Fully covered by the Japan Rail Pass.
  • Keisei Skyliner is the fastest train, reaching Nippori in 36 minutes and Ueno in 41 minutes. Both connect to the JR Yamanote Line for the rest of the city. Make sure you board the Skyliner and not a slower Keisei service from the same platforms.
  • Keisei Access Express is the budget rail option, reaching Ueno in about 65 to 75 minutes with no seat reservation needed.
  • Airport buses run to Tokyo Station and Shinjuku Bus Terminal in 65 to 90 minutes depending on traffic. Cheaper than the trains but less predictable.
  • Taxis are available but the journey is long and very expensive. Only practical for groups or very late arrivals.

Pick up a Welcome Suica or Pasmo Passport card at the airport station for easy travel on trains, metro and buses once you reach the city. The last Narita Express leaves around 9:45 pm and the last Skyliner around 10:30 pm, so check times if arriving late.
