Getting to central Tokyo from Narita (NRT) and Haneda (HND) airports

Tokyo has two main airports. Narita (NRT) is about 60 km east of the city and handles most international flights. Haneda (HND) is only 15 km south and is far quicker to reach.

From Narita (NRT)

  • Narita Express (N'EX) runs to Tokyo Station in about 55 minutes, continuing to Shinjuku and Shibuya. Fully covered by the Japan Rail Pass. Trains depart roughly every 30 minutes.
  • Keisei Skyliner reaches Ueno in about 40 minutes. Better if your hotel is in eastern Tokyo. Make sure you board the Skyliner and not a slower Keisei service from the same platforms.
  • Budget buses take 70 to 90 minutes but cost a fraction of the trains.

From Haneda (HND)

  • Tokyo Monorail reaches Hamamatsucho on the JR Yamanote Line in about 13 minutes by express.
  • Keikyu Line reaches Shinagawa in about 13 minutes by airport express, handy for the Shinkansen or west-central Tokyo.

Both airports accept Suica and Pasmo IC cards on all trains and monorails. If you have the choice of airport, Haneda saves considerable time and money.
