Getting to central Guangzhou from Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN)

Baiyun Airport is about 28 km north of central Guangzhou. Terminal 1 is closed for renovation until at least 2028, so all flights now use Terminal 2 or the newer Terminal 3. Metro Line 3 is the most practical way into the city for most travellers.

  • Metro Line 3 connects via Airport North station inside Terminal 2. Trains run south into Tianhe, the main commercial district, in about 45 to 55 minutes. The line splits at Tiyu Xilu, so check the destination shown on the front of the train before boarding. Trains run from about 6:10 am to 11 pm. Terminal 3 passengers can reach Airport North station via a free shuttle bus.
  • Airport shuttle buses cover numerous routes to destinations across Guangzhou and nearby cities, including Guangzhou South Railway Station. Buses depart every 15 to 30 minutes from the transport centre next to Terminal 2. Journey times range from 50 to 90 minutes depending on the route.
  • Taxis are available from ranks at Terminal 2 and Terminal 3. The drive to central Guangzhou takes roughly 30 to 50 minutes, longer in peak traffic. Didi (China's main rideshare app) is widely used and typically cheaper than a metered taxi.

Mobile payment via Alipay or WeChat Pay is accepted on the metro and most buses. Setting up Alipay before you arrive will save considerable hassle, as it works for transport, food and most purchases across the city.
