Hobart Travel Information
The beautiful city of Hobart developed at the foot of Mt. Wellington and along the banks of Derwent River. Originally inhabited by the Mouheneener Aborigines, the British established a penal colony here in 1803. The community was named for Lord Hobart, who served as the Colonial Secretary. Many of the historic Georgian and Victorian buildings in the city were constructed by the prisoners. Today, Hobart enjoys recognition as the capital of Tasmania. The city is also the most populous and currently has 217,973 residents.
