Hobart Travel Information

The beautiful city of Hobart developed at the foot of Mt. Wellington and along the banks of Derwent River. Originally inhabited by the Mouheneener Aborigines, the British established a penal colony here in 1803. The community was named for Lord Hobart, who served as the Colonial Secretary. Many of the historic Georgian and Victorian buildings in the city were constructed by the prisoners. Today, Hobart enjoys recognition as the capital of Tasmania. The city is also the most populous and currently has 217,973 residents.

Historic Places to Visit in Hobart

Picturesque, historic and educational, the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens spans 14 hectares. With trees almost 200 years old, the gardens feature a large selection of plants from all over the world. Considered the oldest in the country, the Egyptian Revival styled Hobart Synagogue was constructed in 1845. Explore the waterfront at Salamanca Place. The Georgian warehouses found here now house galleries, boutique stores, restaurants and theatres. The Art Gallery, Parliament House and the Tasmanian Museum are also located here. Battery Point is the oldest suburb and features everything from quaint fisherman's cottages to elaborate mansions. Get a unique perspective of Hobart's history by joining a ghost tour around the community.

Outdoor enthusiasts enjoy a relaxing kayak voyage down the Derwent River day or night and get a unique view of Hobart. Journey to Mt. Wellington and travel along the trails on foot, by bike, horse or 4WD. Hike through lushly forested gullies and see the Sphinx Rock along the Lenah Valley Track. Find the Octopus tree or follow the path to Wellington Falls. Adrenaline junkies adore climbing the rocky towers of the Organ Pies. Spend a day scaling the 1,270 metre summit for spectacular views over the city.
