Darwin Travel Information
Darwin is the capital and largest city in Australia's Northern Territory. The HMS Beagle sailed into the harbor during its survey in 1839; the city is named for Charles Darwin who travelled on a previous voyage on that ship. While aboriginal peoples have a long history in the region and Europeans visited as early as the 1600s, today's Darwin is a modern city, having been rebuilt after destruction caused by war (raids during WWII) and natural causes (a cyclone). The city is an important port as well as a major mining and energy centre.
h2 class="LocationInformation">Travelling from Darwin Airport to the Central Business DistrictDarwin International Airport is a 24/7 operation. It has one terminal used for both domestic and international flights. The airport is 13 kilometres from the central business district, and the trip to town is a fast 15 minute ride.
If you want to drive yourself, all major car rental companies are present at the airport, with counters near baggage claim. When relying on a satellite navigation system, note that the airport is in Marrara, Northern Territory. When staying at an airport hotel, there is a free shuttle bus available. Look for the telephone in the baggage claim area to notify the hotel to send the bus. There is also a shuttle bus service to hotels in the city centre. There are several taxi companies that pickup at the taxi rank in front of the terminal. You will pay an exit toll from the airport as well as your fare. Rides downtown cost about $25-$30. Other car services and limousines can also be found outside the terminal; negotiate the rate with the driver and be aware you will also need to pay the exit toll.
