Brisbane Travel Information
As the capital of the state of Queensland, Brisbane is the third largest city in Australia, with 2.2 million residents. Situated along the Brisbane River, for which it was named, the first white settlers arrived when the area was established as a penal colony in 1824. Prior to the penal colony, the area had been historically settled by Aborigines. Brisbane itself was not made an official city until 1902, much after the state of Queensland was well established. Since the hosting the Commonwealth Games in 1982, Brisbane has gained recognition and popularity around the world, especially among tourists. Today it is one of Australia's cultural hubs, offering a rich variety of things to see and do, including fine dining, sporting activities, wildlife habitats and famous historical sites.
