Korean Air FAQs

Frequently asked questions about Korean Air
Is Korean Air a good airline?

Korean Air is one of the world's top full-service carriers, holding a Skytrax 5-Star rating for five consecutive years. They were also named AirlineRatings.com Airline of the Year in 2025. They're known for outstanding cabin crew service, excellent food — particularly their signature Korean cuisine — and above-average legroom in economy. Korean Air is a founding member of the SkyTeam alliance.

Where does Korean Air fly from Australia?

Korean Air operates direct flights from Sydney (daily) and Brisbane (several times a week) to Seoul Incheon. Sister airline Asiana Airlines also flies direct from Melbourne three times a week. From Seoul, you can connect onward to destinations across Asia, Europe, and North America through Korean Air's extensive network and SkyTeam partner airlines. Incheon is one of the world's best-connected hub airports, making Korean Air a strong option for reaching destinations beyond South Korea.

What baggage allowance does Korean Air offer?

This depends on your fare type, so check carefully when booking. Economy Saver fares (the cheapest) include one checked bag at 23kg. Economy Standard and Flex fares include two checked bags at 23kg each. Prestige (Business) Class gets two bags at 32kg each. All passengers can bring one carry-on bag plus a personal item, combined max 10kg. If you're a heavy packer, make sure you book at least a Standard fare to get that second bag included.

What cabin classes does Korean Air offer?

Korean Air offers Economy, a new Premium Economy class (launched in 2025), and Prestige Class (their business class) on most long-haul routes. First Class is available on select aircraft. Premium Economy features wider seats with extra recline and meals from the Prestige Class menu — a good middle ground if you want more comfort without the full business class price. Economy is solid too, with 33-34 inch seat pitch on wide-body aircraft, which is above the industry average.

Does Korean Air include meals and entertainment?

Yes — complimentary meals, drinks, and seatback entertainment are included in every class. Korean Air is famous for its in-flight bibimbap, specially prepared to preserve flavour and texture at altitude. You'll get a choice of Korean and Western dishes, plus complimentary beer, wine, and spirits. You can even ask for instant ramen as a snack between meals. Entertainment screens are available on all long-haul aircraft with movies, TV shows, and music.

What alliance is Korean Air part of?

Korean Air is a founding member of SkyTeam, which includes Delta Air Lines, Air France, KLM, Vietnam Airlines, Garuda Indonesia, and others. SkyTeam is less prominent in Australia than oneworld (Qantas) or Star Alliance (Singapore Airlines), but that can work in your favour — there's often less competition for award seats. Korean Air's loyalty program is SKYPASS, and miles can be earned across all SkyTeam partners.

What does the Korean Air and Asiana Airlines merger mean for travellers?

Korean Air completed its acquisition of Asiana Airlines in late 2024, and the two airlines are now being integrated. The Asiana brand is expected to be fully phased out by early 2027. During the transition, both airlines continue to operate independently, so you may find yourself on either carrier's aircraft on Korean routes. The combined airline will have a larger network and fleet, which should mean more flight options and better connections through Seoul in the long run.

Is Seoul Incheon a good airport for connections?

Seoul Incheon is consistently rated among the best airports in the world. It's clean, efficient, and packed with facilities including free showers, rest areas, and a transit hotel. If you have a longer layover, Incheon offers free guided transit tours to nearby attractions like Gyeongbokgung Palace and Insa-dong. There's also a Korean Cultural Centre with free hanbok (traditional clothing) experiences. Minimum connection times for Korean Air flights are typically around 1.5-2 hours.

How do I find cheap Korean Air flights?

Track Korean Air fares on IWantThatFlight and set up fare alerts to catch price drops. Pay attention to the fare type when booking — Economy Saver is the cheapest but only includes one checked bag, so factor in baggage costs if you need more. Korean Air runs periodic sales on routes from Australia. Being flexible with dates and considering shoulder season travel (avoiding Korean holidays and Australian school holidays) will help you find the best deals.
