Darwin Travel Information

Darwin, Australia’s northernmost capital city, is the nation’s gateway to Southeast Asia. Known for its warm climate, it is Australia’s only tropical capital city. Despite being located in such a remote region, Darwin has developed into a cosmopolitan and affluent center of urban life while retaining a small town feel. With its variety of restaurants, bars, cafes, museums, and art collections, Darwin has a lot to offer any visitor.

The Waterfront

Darwin’s waterfront is a great place to get to know the city. During the day, you can go fishing from the wharf or swim in the lagoon any time of the year. In the evening, you can feast on fresh seafood in the many restaurants nearby. Just a short walk from the city center, the waterfront is a must-visit spot in Darwin.

Dry Season Fun

May to October is Darwin’s dry season, and it’s also the season for festivals and markets. Music fans can enjoy the Bass in the Grass festival in late May. Alice Springs is the scene of the Imparja Camel Cup races, an event you won’t see anywhere else outside of Arabia. In August, aboriginal art and culture is on display at the Garma Festival. And throughout the dry season, you can go shopping at the festive Mindil Beach Sunset Market.

Enjoy Unique Art Displays

The Parap district is the perfect place to start learning about early and contemporary aboriginal artwork. The Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory in Fannie Bay features aboriginal art as well as well as works by regional artists. The art gallery at the heart of Stuart Park contains ten rooms of aboriginal art, and many smaller private galleries can be found throughout the central business district.
