As the capital and largest city of Western Australia, Perth is the fourth largest city in the country, with a total metropolitan population of 1.97 million. The city, located on the Indian Ocean in the southwestern portion of the continent, was originally established in 1829 by Captain James Sterling as the administrative center for the Swan River Colony. Perth became known as the City of Light when residents light up their houses and turned on all streetlights in 1962 when American astronaut John Glenn orbited the earth in Friendship 7.
Perth's location on a flat coastal plain along the Swan River, bordered by the Darling Scarp on the east and the Indian Ocean on the west, help define the city's laid back lifestyle. The area's temperate Mediterranean-style climate is ideal for the many beaches that residents and visitors alike frequent. The transitional times of autumn and spring are the best times to visit Perth. Visitors flock to see the famous wildflowers in Kings Park and the Avon Valley after spring rains, while the city's many public parks are also a showcase of color.
