Brisbane Travel Information

Brisbane is the capital of Queensland and Australia’s third most populous city. Located on a bend of the Brisbane River, the city was first settled in the early 19th century and named after the Scottish Governor of New South Wales, Sir Thomas Brisbane. In recent years, Brisbane has developed a booming tourism industry as well as serving as one of Australia’s chief business centers. The Port of Brisbane is widely used for trade, making it the third most important port in Australia. Brisbane has hosted many major cultural, political and sporting events, including the Commonwealth Games, the Word Expo and the G-20 summit. Many of Brisbane’s most popular tourism attractions are nature-themed, including the Brisbane Forest Park, City Botanic Gardens and Australia Zoo

Brisbane Airport

Brisbane Airport (BNE) is the chief airport serving the greater Brisbane area. Just as the city is Australia’s third-largest, Brisbane airport is also the country’s third-busiest airport. 26 airlines fly from Brisbane Airport to 42 domestic and 28 international destinations. As of 2013, the airport served over 21 million passengers per year. Virgin Australia uses Brisbane Airport as its main hub, while Qantas and Jetstar both use the airport as a secondary hub. The airport consists of two passenger terminals. The international terminal features lounges for Emirates Airlines, Air New Zealand, Qantas and Singapore Airlines. The domestic terminal features a Qantas Club lounge and two other business lounges. An inter-terminal bus ferries passengers between the two airport terminals. A private rail system connects both airport terminals with downtown Brisbane and other Gold Coast locations. Called Airtrain, the service runs on the Citytrain suburban network and operates daily.
