Flight Centre Lowest Airfare Guarantee VS Expedia Price Match

Price beat guarantees are a wonderful invention, and as a consumer, if you’re not taking full advantage of them, you might as well be handing out hundreds of dollars to strangers on the street.

Go on, we’ll wait here while you dole it out.

Didn’t think so.

Next time you want to fly anywhere, do your due diligence and see if you can get an even cheaper price by taking advantage of the price match guarantees being offered by travel agencies and airlines.

I wrote just recently about the Jetstar price beat guarantee… well, here are three travel agents just as hungry to nab your business from their competitors:

Expedia Best Price Guarantee

Expedia Expedia Best Price GuaranteeThe Expedia price match covers not just airfares but hotels, vacation packages, rental cars and other activities as well.

Rather than just offering to beat the price before booking (which is an option, should you choose to accept it), the clever folks at Expedia have a different approach. If you book with Expedia, then find a comparable flight (et al) within 24 hours, they’ll refund you the price difference in cash and give you a travel coupon worth $50 to use on your next Expedia booking.

Which means you can nab your Expedia deal quickly and with confidence when you find one you want and then go looking for a cheaper quote elsewhere for peace of mind that you got the right deal.

To qualify for the Expedia price match, you need to have booked your flight or tour within 24 hours of claiming the price match guarantee. Say it’s a flight from Melbourne to Sydney – you also need to make sure the travel dates are the same, the airline, class, fare basis and cancellation policy are the same and quoted in AUD.

To submit a claim, you simply need to have all the information in front of you and then give them a call on 13 38 10.

For example, we noticed - using the I Want That Flight comparison calendar - that Expedia were charging more for some Virgin Australia flights when the flights included baggage.

A Melbourne to Sydney leg on Virgin was $136.70, which includes a credit card fee - $129 without it. The $129 price is what Expedia would match down from the $142 they were charging (and there are no credit card fees with Expedia bookings), plus you’d get a $50 voucher for your next booking with Expedia… which you could use for your flight back home!

STA Travel Price Beat Guarantee

STA Travel Price Beat GuaranteeSTA Travel started its life as a student travel agency, giving them a reputation for cheap prices if you were a young, poor student wanting to see the world.

The STA Travel price beat guarantee is valid for international flights and round the world flights and tours departing from Australia. It does not include matching for flights from Jetstar, Tiger Air, Air Asia X or Pacific Blue.

If you find a cheaper price on your flights from another travel agent or travel website, you must get a copy of it in writing on letterhead before you make your booking with STA Travel (they will not match on existing bookings, unlike Expedia) with all the information including your travel dates, airfare descriptions, number of passengers and price including all fees, charges and booking conditions and you have to present it to STA on the same day you printed it off so they can match it. Hard work!

You also must call 134 782 or visit an STA Travel branch to submit the competitor quote. They won’t take your request by email. And they may even do some investigating into where the original quote came from… if they find it to be no longer available, or invalid they won’t price match on it, nor will they enter into an ongoing price war with the competitor quote.

But assuming you’ve bothered to go through all that, they will not only match the airfare but they will beat it! Interestingly, they don’t tell us by how much. Could be $1, could be $10, could be $100. It all depends on how saucy they’re feeling on the day, I reckon.

However, if the competitor quote you’ve dug up genuinely checks out and STA Travel can’t beat it, they will give you a $1000 travel credit. I’m willing to bet they almost never let that happen, but hey – if you have enough time and energy up your sleeve for this little exercise, they could just surprise us all.

Flight Centre Lowest Airfare Guarantee

Flight Centre Lowest Airfare GuaranteeThese guys owned the phrase “Lowest Airfare Guaranteed” for a long time (I bet you’re hearing the jingle in your head right now, in fact! Earworm. You’re welcome) and they still stand by their old catchphrase.

Flight Centre will accept and match quotes for flights that depart from Australia, only when the comparison quote comes from other Australian travel agencies, airlines or registered Australian businesses and websites. You must provide Flight Centre with a written quote on the company letterhead, or from the comparison company’s website.

As always, the comparison price must be for the same airline, on the same dates, for the same leg of the trip and the same amount of passengers. It must also be a fare that is available to the general public for booking. Everything about the airfare must be identical to obtain the Flight Centre price match, including the payment method. So the figure you need to take to them is the final payment figure including all fees and charges that would go along with, say, a credit card payment.

Once you get Flight Centre a valid comparison quote, they will beat it by $1 per person.

The Flight Centre price match is only valid for price matching before you’ve booked, not after. If they cannot match the price, you will fly for free – and yes, there are reports of this actually happening around on the web.

So there you have it – a quick and easy way to save some extra dollars next time you fly.
